Photo Storytelling

The Family Pillar

My grandmother: the face that guided the family and the pillar she always

was before her illness began to take hold.

The Daily Schedule

My family’s war map: the organised variety of medications and schedules. It

symbolises the constant burden and the new routine imposed by managing

the disease.

The Anchor

Focus on the hands: a silent but powerful testament to the care and physical

presence she requires. It represents the quiet devotion and the daily act of

family and friends to anchor her to the present.

The Promise of Comfort

A moment of total surrender and protection: her embrace signifies that,

despite the cognitive distance, the bond and the love for others remains

unconditional.

The Corridor of Uncertainty

The immediate struggle: inside her own house, the familiar space is now

a labyrinth. This captures the profound confusion and the loss of physical

reference in the present.

The Bag & The Fear

The acute fear: her bag is her most prised possession. It captures the anxiety,

distrust, and the new psychological reality of fearing what is lost or might be

stolen.

The Weight of The Decision

The exterior of the nursing home: it represents the difficult crossroads for my

family and the dilemma between home care and the necessity of professional

support.

The Comfort of Faith

When the world fragments, she returns to the spiritual. In moments of deep

confusion, faith acts as the last secure harbor and a source of profound

emotional peace.

My Complete Story

A striking contrast: the past is vivid and accessible, while the present is

blurred. It highlights what the mind still preserves clearly and beautifully.

The Last Stroke

The signature of my grandma: one of the few things she hasn’t forgotten, and

the one that still carries the essence of who she is.

Still Here was developed as part of a photographic storytelling project exploring the emotional and psychological impact of Alzheimer’s through an intimate family perspective.

Responding to a brief focused on building a visual narrative through still photography, the project examined themes of memory, identity, loss, and emotional resilience.

The concept explores the gradual erosion of memory and independence through the experience of my grandmother, capturing both her internal confusion and the emotional reality faced by those around her. Through symbolic imagery and shifting points of view between grandmother and family, the narrative reflects on fragility, disconnection, and the small moments of connection that continue to remain despite the progression of the disease.

This project combined conceptual photography, visual storytelling, and intimate symbolism to build a deeply personal narrative centered on memory, absence, love, and care.
